I wanted to introduce you to this resource: an animation film produced by Canada's National Film Board in 1968.
This is just an example of a "discussion starter": what concepts and ideas concerning our PII and conceptual framework makes you this film think about?

This video is very illustrative for me to understand and to make understand others in the organization, various elements of planning performance. Some of them are:
Systems approach. The result is a product of the interaction of many factors that cause an effect and therefore we should plan and manage as much as possible to achieve the result we want. It suggest us to reflect on the cause and effect relationships that may exist between systems of different levels.
Each part or process of the organization is part of a larger system and it also have in its internal parts others subsystems that form it and affect it. Some are completely formal and visible, such as business processes, regulations and policies, but other systems may be less formal and can cause great effects such as systems of leadership, culture, religion or natural environment.
Priority. This video helps also to reflect on the importance of priority of our actions or decisions as suggested to see first things from a higher level or from the outside which gives a broader perspective of our system and suggest too, to value (or not) to some decisions we are interested in implementing.
Mega. Our actions and decisions at the smallest level of the universe such as the cells of our body also have a network of cause and effect that maybe may seem small and insignificant in the scale of the universe, but multiplied by the actions and decisions of others can help to cause serious effects on the world and even in the universe. Therefore we should not underestimate the importance of uniting efforts to bring about a positive impact on the world we live in, and we are leaving to future generations.
Those 8 minutes of the video went so fast, yet very slow. The first part of the animated video made me think in a very philosophical way as the camera zoomed out on it's way through the universe that suddenly I forgot what I needed to answer by watching the video. As the camera zoom was back on Earth where the kid is paddling in a river, I remembered why I was watching the video.
When you watch a whole project as a universe, you can see a lot of things, things that almost everyone can see. These things seem like priority at first glance. You work so hard to solve all the problems that appear at first instance that you forget what the core of the project or investigation is. The key for a successful project is to look at things from the inside, start where it all began. Searching for the roots of what you're doing will make it clearer when it comes to solving a problem. When you watch from the inside, all of the external will solve itself. Though it sounds very psychological, I think this applies to every project you set out. Want to embark on a business? Why don't you first look at how's the market working or has worked through the years? What has make it so successful? Which are its lows and highs?.
The Cosimc Zoom 1968 Film
What I see in this movie is a zoom-out and a zoom-in that can be applied to any organism. At PII, we can make an analogy to the Doctoral Program process to design a high performance organization.
The Zoom-Out. From system to supra-system.
A zoom-out can represent going out of the organization. This is a zoom at the ecosystem in which the company participates, an analysis of the local, regional, national and international arenas, and the opportunities and threats set by clients (markets) to be served; stakeholders to satisfy; economic, social, cultural and political environment in which to develop and operate; competitors to benchmark and outperform; and, financial, intellectual, human, materials, equipment and technology resources to deploy in order to design, produce and deliver “irresistible” products and services to conquer a targeted market. An analysis of our system in the context of the supra-system, will lead us to the strategic plan, which effectively executed, will get us to obtain Mega and Macro goals.
The Zoom In. Execution Designed for Higher Performance
The zoom-in can represent the detailed design and management processes of organizations that add Value. We can get to this by using the Anatomy of Performance technology to engineer performance that connects Mega to Macro to Micro objectives. To do so, we have to identify the value chain processes (those that will produce the products and services with which we intend to satisfy customers); we will then “zoom” deeper and deeper breaking the processes into sub-processes, tasks and sub-tasks, until we get clear on how to consistently produce the planned process outputs that will lead us to the desired organizational and societal outcomes.
Carlos' comment is making me thing of Mega, Macro and Mico in terms of zoom out/xoom in. Ant thoughts on that analogy?
If I do the analogy with our projects, makes me think of the importance of each of the view who have the concepts of mega planning levels, where the cosmos toward the outside represents the mega, the lagoon and the macro environment and interior of the human being represents the micro, the person representing the company or project, and how these factors can affect us, both externally and internally, they sometimes underestimate or do not take into account for thinking they are far away us or that seem insignificant or at worst case scenario, staying in a comfort zone and just let the waters carry us where they want.
In designing our projects must define the scope of it, the goal toward which is directed and to zoom out and zoom in, ensuring its proper implementation, growth or development, through tools learned in the PHD, which will mega planning from above, the customer experience, e-performance, performance anatomy (AOP), among other no less important, which will help us get to individual, organizational and social.
We conclude that this film suggests that a project must take into account the perspectives at all levels, both internally and externally, to mega to micro, business, organization, and the performer's management by other side is the point of comparison, that is, from certain positions we can identify the magnitude and the gap of a situation or a problem, and also gauge the great potential and the opportunity to penetrate existing markets, international, adapting our products and services to multicultural markets.
Excellent comments: each one selected an interesting, thought-provoking approach and related the short film with our PII content
Our PII program is actually building bridges between business microeconomics (mostly operational) and societal macroeconomics (mostly strategic).
Alberto focused on the challenges of making the systems visible. Madgalena rigthly pointed out to the delicate equilibrium and balance between society, community, organizations and individuals (including their minds and bodies)
Carlos rigthly swa the management challenges: linking strategy with implementation without losing the balance.
Aybeth reminded us of the psychological, learning dimension and the extistence of "comfort zones"
Great points.
