During the crisis of 1970s (oil crises, 15 % unemployment) and 1980s (1987 Wall Street crash), River North was a run-down neigborhood in downtown Chicago. When manufacturing abandoned the downtown area, most factory buildings remained empty and others were demolished because the value of the land exceeded that of the building.
Low life and crime flourished, and River North became known as Death Row.
During the nineties, however, artists and developers brought back the life to the neighborhood by installing restaurants and art stores, transforming old factories into "lofts" and attracting young professionals who wanted to live in downtown Chicago but could not afford Gold Coast (Lake Michigan shoreline) prices.
Today, River North is Chicago's Soho and one of the most coveted and safe neighborhoods of the city.
More than 200 art galleries and restaurants are installed in the neighborhood that continues
to build rental and condo towers as well as lofts and townhomes for a growing population of young and n ot so young professionals (I am one of them)Food for thought?
Take a look at the testimony of developers and take a drive through the neighborhood.
How could we apply these examples to our projects?

For the project of alternative tourism, we have identified several threats on the one hand the lack of funding schemes for community development and on the other hand, lack of entrepreneurial culture we have within the communities, if we really want develop jobs and businesses that benefit an entire community should create an innovation system to modify the behavior of the inhabitants of communities, it is proposed a system based on the performance of both personal and community development activities Circuit ecotourism, caring nature for the social and recreational activities provide a tangible value to the project activities. If we generate a culture of continuous improvement we can develop synergies for the development of greater social value to obtain a positive currency effect. Taking the example of Batawa is a beautiful and unique shoreline environment, complete with rolling
drumlins, large stands of mature trees, and abundant wildlife, all leading the
Ministry of Natural Resources to designate 328 ha of the 607 ha site in the
Batawa Planning Area as a provincially significant ANSI (Area of Natural and
Scientific Interest). This includes more than 2 km of Trent River shoreline.
That presents a unique opportunity. Such an incredible landscape demands
planning and design excellence. It also demands a level of stewardship that
must result in nothing less than a sustainable community in all its forms.
Batawa will provide an unprecedented opportunity to demonstrate stewardship
in action, bringing teams of youth rangers to volunteer on projects, and creating
a classroom setting in partnership with an academic institution that will put
new ideas to the test.
The Batawa community is already engaged, participating in collective composting,
awareness activities and energy saving initiatives such as Project Porchlight,
recently implemented as well in the Ottawa Carleton Region.
To work with rural communities requires leadership group within the communities that are developed with individual activities, to coordinate efforts among stakeholders to encourage the development of their environment, accelerating the process of social innovation
In maputo Africa, they do it the next:
Identifying needs in Agricultural Education.
Focus: Public Institutions
Action oriented approach:
What opportunities for collaboration?
Key Questions to help in Action Planning
-How to ensure knowledge generated is part of Knowledge sharing web?
-How do we capture the needs/demands/ of the beneficiaries?
-how do we capture the information and resources that can address the needs of the beneficiaries.
Check institutions with best practices in KM to adopt.
1. Conduct regular particpatory needs analysis to identify learning needs
setting objectives
curriculum development implementation M&E
Promote cost sharing among stakeholders.
2. Review and identify policies ^policy frameworks, institutional systems, resources and structures neede to perform university fuctions optimally.
Involve CG centres & research institutes to ensure quality in research to gain adequate competencies by the learners.
3. Review teaching and learning practices to meet expected learning outcomes.
4. Review the KM systems of instittions in order to identiffy best practices to customise to our environment. Develop criteria for our best practices.
Roles and responsabilities of partners
Follow up of decisions taken:
what mechanisms. timelines. Validation.
We can take some axamples about international experience and applied in our ecotourism project
Rural tourism takes many forms, so it is difficult to give an exact definition, for our project is very interesting how a different authors define a rural development, in this part Webster (1975) defines rural development as a process which leads to a rise in the capacity of rural people to control their environment, resulting from more extensive use of the benefits which ensure such control. Rural development is affected by many factors, including economic development, humanitarian attitudes, environment, social values and knowledge.
The High inmigration rate from the communities to the urban citys increase the issues from the goverment.
The people looking opprotunities in the cities and them dont create that oportunities in the rural regions, our work is help them to build that opportunities inside in the communities this is the challenge for PII ecoturims project.

Some ideas we can applie in the communities, Kenyan example about a solar lantern has been developed for use in rural Kenyan homes using sunlight to charge a battery during the day, which then powers a lamp after dark. This project has been developed by IT Consultants, together with project partners International Development Enterprises, in Kenya. Using a combination of highly technical production methods and participatory market surveys, IT Consultants hope to come up with a product that is tailor-made for Kenyan customers.
Yes, we can work together for ecotourism projecto to incentive the knowlegement inside the communities aroun the ecooturism circuit.

This article show us how a region or a group of companies in a city fell down in crisis and after a time emerge with other activities and generate development to people who live there. Is interesting how a region that had many factories in past days, now have many galleries and artist living there and this is an example that certain area or region can become in a prosper area.
This experience can be used at the Alternative Tourism Corridor considering the impulse that can get when art Is used as a strategy to attract talent and investment; in other words we can invite musician, writers or painter to capture in their work landscape, culture an people in the south or Sonora.
In addition ITSON can use the art gallery to show pictures or sculptures that can be made by local artist inspirited by the corridor´s communities. With this activity we can focus in a different market segment: artist and culture.
Also is important to consider that every year in the city of Alamos Sonora, the Government of the state of Sonora organize an important festival where art and culture is the center of all the activities. We can use this event to promote the corridor with artist that visit Sonora, for instance showing pictures of landscape or any art expression related with nature and communities.
This interesting article is about how a Northfué River neighborhood was slowly declining, and were described as manufacturers gradually abandoned factories, living standards fell and there was bad weather for four was called the Corridor of death. But during the nineties artists brought to life by installing neighborhood art centers at the same time was appealing to young professionals. Concludes that today is one of the most coveted neighborhoods in the city. Shall also continue to plant attractive to us for the young and not so young.
This picture makes me think about the "small" changes that are needed to give life to something that apparently has no chance to live. In the case of the Yaqui ethnicity, even if one group is more organizational capacity, is, unfortunately, despite a stalemate that also has a national cultural heritage that has not been tapped for the benefit of ethnicity.
It makes me think about the importance of activating such intellectual capital, through which self-generating alternatives for these people.
Through the work being done in the quality of life in the Yaqui ethnicity, and more specifically to the business unit in circumscribed hostel Cardenas activates part of that heritage through projects with the participation of Direct the children and young Yaquis.
Business opportunities in reading during downturns V: Client service 2009 champions is a reflection of how a city is wracked by unemployment, and yet despite these conditions there is an establishment that continues and thrives. With regard to the draft Quality of Life in the Yaqui ethnicity can say that makes me think about the importance of service quality as one of many ways to be careful. This aspect is neglected in children and adolescents and parents, and is the precariousness of services or as little to offer shelter, but also with the social-treatment, creating a situation of apathy and low involvement of the parties. This is an area of opportunity that is already working with the view that in a medium-term business unit in which the project is located, are significant results, and that, despite external conditions .. this is a business unit to flourish.
Undoubtedly, since the sport came to Mexico has not been supported as should, many of the athletes now have retired or have no age to compete in the Olympics, Mexico always have a few medals in Olympics Games and what is curious that Paralympics games people sometimes do much better.
In my opinion, the sport in Mexico can be much more than what today is, in all senses, but the first step is to redefine the role of sports organizations in Mexico as CONADE who should stop doing that id doing and instead better define strategies and strengthening of institutions that make the sport, especially the institutes of sport in the states, sport federations, state associations, universities and all they represent: leagues, clubs, coaches and athletes.
I find an interesting analogy between the case of the North River of Chicago with our project because the Weightlifting Federation and all the federations in Mexico are face a degree of decadence that must be overcome and like in the recovery of the Northern River Chicago is imperative to attract young people who want to excel and advance the sport in Mexico. At the world level the weights (Weightlifting) has increased and instead of 25 or 26 years competitors now we see young people between 17 and 18 years who are already very high marks. Mexico should not be an exception.
Another important aspect that I believe apply to our project is the creation of an ecosystem around the business since Weightlifting as in the case of Rio North, generating business to strengthen the attraction not only those involved in it, also who like to follow. This is certainly as the same of the lines of social development an important factor to grow the Weightlifting in Mexico and the world.
